A Vintage Journey Challenge - Use A Quote

Welcome to our new challenge for A Vintage Journey. This month our host is the lovely Jenny and our challenge is to "Use A Quote".

Here is what Jenny had to say about her challenge.

"Take a quote! Any quote! Whether it be on a stamp, a sticker, handwritten or sourced from the internet and incorporate it in your vintage; shabby; mixed media; art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk project".
This month the Creative Guides are using substrates from That's Crafty and I opted for one of the upright substrates the MDF Upright Torn Note Page. Although my sentiment does not take centre stage it does play a huge part in the design, its says everything I wanted to say in just a few words.
I began by applying a coat of Gesso to the substrate and then drying with a heat tool. I then added a few pea sized amount of Dina Wakley's Heavy Body Acrylic to the substrate; in this case Ocean, Turquoise and Lime.
I then brayered the paint over the substrate.
I continued to brayer until I was happy with the blend of colours.
Dry the paint with a heat tool and then repeat the same process for the reverse of the substrate.
I then applied Dina Wakley's Ruby Acrylic Paint to a piece of scrap white card and then spread the paint out with a paintbrush.
Press the painted card lightly onto the background of the substrate.
Touching the substrate lightly with the painted scrap of card adds delicate layers of colour to the background.
Continue with this process until you are happy with the touches of colour added to the background.
Paint the Prima Resin Chantilly Royal Frame with a layer of Finnabair's Brass Paste and then dry with a heat tool.
Add the Blue and Mint Green Pastes to the frame using a pouncing, stippling motion, adding layers of each colour to the frame.
Continue with this process until you are happy with the coverage of Patina Paste.
Rub over the frame to remove any excess loose particles of paste and then apply the Brass Paste with a finger over the raised areas, applying only a little Paste at a time. This will highlight all the fabulous detail on the frame.
The Brass Paste finishes off the frame perfectly.
Paint a rusty tin heart with a coat of Ruby Acrylic Paint and then dry with a heat tool and then apply a second coat but this time with a finger, dabbing the paint onto the heart to give texture and then dry with a heat tool.
At this point before adding the frame to the substrate I decided to add rusty wire wrapped around the frame for added texture.
I added random torn edges from a note pad to echo the torn edge of the substrate. I coloured the torn edges with Acrylic Paint.
I added the sticker quote "it's the little things that make life big" to add an important message to my piece.
I added touches of Ruby Acrylic to the base of the substrate to echo those in the main feature.
Before I added the heart I painted a scrap of white card with Turquoise Heavy Body Acrylic and then touched the card lightly onto the heart to add a touch more colour randomly to the heart and then dried with a heat tool. I also included a Salvage Doll from Tim Holtz Idea-ology range, again painted with Acrylic Paints, applied with my finger.
Hope you enjoyed the step by steps and I look forward to seeing your entries to this months challenge.

Our sponsor this month is That's Crafty who are offering a voucher to one randomly chosen winner.
Thanks so much for stopping by. Tracy x x

What a great technique to reveal the under layer of paint. One I've used in furniture refinishing, but not so much in mixed media. Thanks for the inspiration! I love these colors together and your ombre effect - fantastic! Hugs, Autumn

Amazing, Tracy! The feature elements are so great - the altering of the frame, the trademark wire-wrapping - but I'm just as taken with the background... the subtle gesso texture under the paint layers, and the cool mono-printed red accent scratches. All so inspiring.
