I have been participating in Andy Skinner's on-line workshop Timeworn Techniques, which I can highly recommend if you are looking to try something a little different. Here I have used his rust technique, peeled paint technique and aged ivory technique.
This is one piece that I really enjoyed creating, I love all things rusty, I love Halloween and I love texture and all those are captured in abundance in my spooky piece. Lots of texture from Gesso and dimension from a framed skull cut six times from mountboard using the Sizzix Skull Die. No spooky creation is complete without bats which I have used around the outside edge of my frame adding two to the central panel, all cut using the Bewitching Hour die. This will take pride of place on my lounge coffee table during our Halloween celebrations.
I owe a huge THANK YOU to my fellow team member Candy who kindly sent me some fabulous Halloween goodies, including the mini skulls on my frame and the larger skull in the bottom right that I have applied the aged ivory technique to.
Once I had created the peeled paint in the background I then cut the vintage cabinet card from thick card, applied the rust technique and added to my background, I thought this was perfect to house my dimensional skull. To add further texture and interest to my piece I applied a thick layer of Gesso to my skull and bats, I am loving this technique at the moment, the skull is so tactile.
I tried to leave a shadow around my skull and on the inside of my skull to add to that spooky feel. I love the rivets around my piece they add to the rustic feel and add further dimension and interest.
I also added bats around all four sides of my frame applying the rust technique once again, I love this little detail, its these small details that make me happy!
From this angle you can see the dimension on my skull, the texture from the Gesso and the peeled paint technique in the background.
